Initial Ideas

A day in the life of a music 'super fan'
  • Aimed at super fans of pop stars like One Direction and Justin Bieber (primarily girls aged 10-16)
  • Different fictional pop stars unlock-able via in-app purchases
  • Narrative involves a super fan's quest to track down their idol and ultimately get to meet them in person
  • Narrative could be done in a diary format, possibly using information from real fans' social networking profiles

Useful info:

Interactive ghost story
  • In the style of 'Goosebumps' series /'Are you afraid of the dark?' Programme
  • Recounts a short story around the paranormal theme
  • Stories within old dusty book - user selects which story they want to experience
  • More stories available through in-app purchases
  • Aimed at 12-17 year olds
  • Purpose--> to entertain and scare the audience
  • Use sound effects and music to enhance atmosphere
  • Interactive elements throughout, e.g. Ouijja board

Examples:

Tie-in with a popular tv series (companion)

  • Transmedia adaptation of a TV show in an interactive story format
  • Could include fan-fiction or new stories that go alongside the main narrative of the series
  • Include character profiles and in-depth information on the show's production
  • Additional stories/content could be released after particular episodes have aired on TV
  • Would need detailed research on successful examples of transmedia narratives - use readings covered in week 3 seminar of cultural & critical studies

Greek Mythology

  • Stories from the perspective of each Greek 'hero' - Odysseus, Theseus, Perceus, Jason (and the Argonauts)
  • Linear story style with interactive elements
  • Could explore styles reminiscent of Greek paintings
  • Ties in with school curriculum - could be used as teaching resource in primary schools
  • Stories are popular with children - Disney adaptation of 'Hercules' and new BBC 'Atlantis' series explores Greek legends in a new narrative

'The Year I Was Born'

  • A self-contained collection of news stories/ photographs/ information from different years
  • Opportunity to find out the story from the year you were born
  • Include sounds and videos
  • Different filters to change what content is available -type of content (news, music, film, technology, fashion), country, etc.
  • Users can add favourites and personalise their year - integrate with other social networking profiles and available for other users to view
  • Good opportunity to digitalise old photographs, videos - preserve memories
  • The story of my birth - users add their own content and create a timeline to give a picture of the year they were born from their perspective
  • Chronicle of my birth
  • Could be aimed at broad target audience - primarily social networking users

Of these initial concepts I am particularly drawn to the 'Year I Was Born' app - this is mainly because it is a more unusual idea and could potentially tap into an area of the app market that has not yet been explored. It also has the potential to appeal to a mass target audience, primarily users of social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter.
